President Yitzhak Herzog said before the visit: "This is an important and unusual political visit to the institutions of the European Union. Belgium is a close friend of Israel and I am sure that the meetings with the king and the government officials will be a catalyst for many cooperations with it. The continuation of the visit - in the European Union - is of unique significance Israel's relationship with European countries and with the institutions of the Union has an impact on almost every area of our lives as a people and as a country - from economy and security, to academia, science, culture, and much more. My visits and meetings bind together the lessons of the past and the vision for the promising future of the partnership between Israel to European countries.

Herzog added that "the culmination of the visit - at the event commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in which Anam addressed the European Parliament, fills me with holy fear. We must not forget that the Holocaust, the darkest abyss in human history, grew on the fertile soil of anti-Semitism that developed in Europe for generations, and unfortunately its head in a variety of ways even at this time. The historical responsibility imposed on the entire family of nations - and the European countries in particular - requires us to go deeper not only in memory and commemoration, but also in drawing lessons, in education, and in a persistent, determined and above all shared struggle against anti-Semitism, racism and hatred of the other."
