"It was the light of the class": they remember one of the women who died in the massacre

Mymy Nhan, who was killed in the Monterey Park shooting, had a permanent smile on her face and was “the light” of dance classes.

This is how she remembers Maksym Kapitanchuk, Nhan's dance instructor.

“I don't even think I've ever seen her without her smile, even through the mask I could see her eyes smiling.

She was the light of the class, of any party, of any class," she told CNN on Monday.

He said he met Nhan in 2010. She became one of his first students and helped him start his career as a dance teacher.

A rifle, ammunition, cell phones: what they found in the suspect's mobile home

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said authorities found a .308-caliber rifle and electronic devices including cell phones and computers in the suspected shooter's mobile home while executing a search warrant early Monday.

They also found "hundreds of rounds" of ammunition and items that led police to believe the suspect was making homemade "firearm suppressors," Luna said at a news conference Monday.

Ballistics and forensic comparisons will need to be performed on all items recovered from the suspected shooter's home, Luna said.

She added that there is "a lot of work to be done there, but we don't want to leave any stone unturned."

Luna said homicide investigators are still working in conjunction with the FBI, ATF and the district attorney's office, among others in what he called a "very complex investigation."

She added that there is still a lot they don't know.

Varun Nikore, executive director of the AAPI Victory Alliance, which advocates for the election of progressive politicians of Asian descent, said on MSNBC Sunday night: “We need an assault weapons ban in this country.

I can't say it more clearly than that."

Also Sunday night, Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted: “No other country in the world is terrified by this constant stream of gun violence.

We need real gun reform at the national level.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the gun was recovered from the Alhambra Ballroom, where the shooter headed 17 minutes after the Monterey Park massacre, just miles away, before being disarmed. by one employee, it was a “semi-automatic assault pistol” with a high-capacity extended magazine.

California has the strictest gun laws in the country,

according to gun control advocacy groups Everytown for Gun Safety and the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

They ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require background checks for gun purchases, and allow law enforcement to seek a court order to prevent a person in crisis from accessing a firearm, according to Everytown.

It is unclear where or how the Monterey Park shooter obtained the weapon.

More than 60% of Asian women have experienced domestic violence

By Julianne McShane and Elizabeth Sedran -

NBC News

Asian-American activist Amanda Nguyen said Monday in an interview with our sister network MSNBC that

"a real conversation needs to be had about the rate of domestic violence in our community

," noting that more than 60% of women of Asian origin in the country are survivors of domestic violence.

The comments from Nguyen, the founder and executive director of the civic organization Rise, which combats hate toward Asians and Pacific Islanders, came hours after the mayor of Monterey Park said the alleged killer was likely looking for his ex-wife to harm her and that the man had a history of domestic violence.

Although it is not clear which specific statistic Nguyen was referring to, violence against Asian and Pacific Islander women is well documented.

A report from the Asia Pacific Institute on gender-based violence found that up to 55% of women in that community had experienced violence in the home.

A report released in March of last year by the National Forum of Asian-Pacific American Women found that 38% of women in this community reported experiencing sexual harassment in the past year and 12% reported experiencing physical violence based on on gender and/or race.

Activists also reported that domestic violence against women of Asian origin or descent increased during the pandemic, and experts say that could worsen as abortion restrictions increase across the country.

Gun violence prevention activists say the Monterey Park, California, ballroom shooting was the 33rd so far in 2023 alone.

The independent research group Gun Violence Archive denounced the massacre, saying on social media that it is the latest example of the scourge caused by firearms in the country.

Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as single incidents in which four or more victims are shot, not including the attacker.

Not even a month has passed since 2023 and there have already been 33 mass shootings in the US.

Monterey Park shooter was 'probably' after his ex-wife
