A
dog shot and killed a hunter
by stepping on a rifle in the back of a pickup truck in Kansas, the United States, local police said.
The animal was sitting in the back of the vehicle, where there was "hunting material and a rifle", when
"it walked on the weapon, causing a detonation"
, said the Sumner County Sheriff's Office, located in the state from Kansas.
The victim, a 30-year-old man, identified as Joseph Smith, was in the passenger seat when he was shot last Saturday.
"He died on the spot," authorities added.
The investigation is continuing, but according to initial reports,
"it is a hunting accident,"
the sheriff's office said.

Smith was a plumber at Browns Plumbing Services in Wichita, company owner Chris Brown said Tuesday, the
New York Post
reported .
“Joe is absolutely the most unique person I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
He was loved by all of us in all walks of life,” Brown wrote in a GoFundMe to help Smith's family cover funeral costs.
And he concluded his farewell: “He made us laugh every morning, either because of him or with him.
He always made sure to be a positive light in my company.
No matter how bad or stressful my day or ours was, Joe always had something to lift our spirits.”
Background in Turkey and Michigan
In November 2022, in Turkey, a similar case occurred when a 32-year-old man, who had also gone hunting, met the same fate as the American hunter in Kansas.
It was in Turkey's Black Sea province of Samsun when Ozgur Gevrekogulu, 32, was loading gear into the trunk of his car after the trip to the Kizlan plateau.
His dog jumped on a friend's back, stepping on the trigger of a shotgun, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reported at the time.
Gevrekoglu died of a gunshot wound to the stomach before paramedics arrived.
In 2015, in the US state of Michigan, a man cooking was shot after one of his cats dropped his 9mm pistol to the ground and discharged the weapon, State Police said.
Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in the lower torso, Fox reported at the time.
