blessed polarization

No democrat should see conflict and argument as a problem. Not even when they are rants in bad taste and razors (verbally razors)

The public relations agency Edelman publishes each January a confidence barometer that measures the state of health of various aspects of democracy and the market economy around the world.

And I am right about the state of health, since they use jargon for medical diagnosis, following the long metaphorical tradition of treating societies as patients who need a cure (an iron surgeon, perhaps).

This year they have measured political polarization through surveys carried out in 28 countries.

With them they have drawn a map of polarization with three groups: slightly polarized countries (the division of opinions is not a problem for those surveyed), with moderate polarization (so much division is somewhat annoying and unpleasant,

It is not a surprise that Spain is in this last group, along with Argentina, Sweden, the United States or Colombia.

In the previous step (moderate polarization, but on the verge of being severe) Brazil, France, Italy or the United Kingdom appear.

The surprise, for me, is in the group of countries where polarization does not exist or is irrelevant.

Take note: Indonesia, China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and India.

Of all of them, the only truly democratic one (and putting quotes around it) is the last one.

In summary, that the best remedy against polarization is to let the Government give its opinion alone while the subjects agree.

A doctor who prescribes beheading for headaches may be labeled brutal and murderous, but not ineffective: without a head, there is no pain.

Without democracy, without parties, without the press, without opinions in the square, polarization ends.

It is the judge's remedy by hanging: nothing soothes a country more than the rocking of rioters on the gallows.

No democrat should see conflict and argument as a problem.

Not even when they are rude, in bad taste and razor-sharp (verbally razor-sharp).

The only danger for a democracy is that those who argue become convinced that there is a better way to live together than perpetual discussion and begin to dream of havens of peace and unanimity like Saudi Arabia or China.

Things get ugly when some of them get the illusion of living without the others and stop understanding that living together does not mean walking hand in hand in harmony through flowery meadows, but rather sharing a square (and a tablecloth and perhaps a bed) with whoever takes you the opposite until you get mad.
