The calathea is a very decorative houseplant with its sophisticated leaf markings.

However, she makes a few demands on her care.

More than 300 species belong to the Calathea genus, which is also called Korbmarante.

The leaf markings on the plant are correspondingly diverse, making it a particularly effective indoor plant.

But the leaves are also a sign of care errors.

If they droop or turn brown or yellow, it's high time to act.

Caring for calathea: Leaves indicate improper treatment

The calathea originally comes from the rainforests of Brazil, so it does well in shady places and feels particularly comfortable with a high humidity of 70 to 80 percent.

This makes the bathroom an ideal location.

You can usually tell whether the plant feels comfortable in your four walls by looking at the leaves:

Curled or brown leaves and dried-up leaf tips are a sign of too little humidity or too little water.

According to the Feey

portal, drooping leaves indicate

a location that is too cold or too sunny, drafts or root rot.

If the leaves are fading, they probably got too much sun.

If the leaves are yellow, you have fertilized too much.

Typical care mistakes from watering to draughts

The following mistakes should be avoided during maintenance:

  • Dry heating air: the calathea doesn’t like that at all.

To increase the humidity, you should regularly spray the plant with low-calcium water or place a bowl of water nearby.

  • Incorrect watering: From spring to autumn you water once or twice a week with room-warm water, in winter about every two weeks.

Waterlogging should be avoided, otherwise there is a risk of root rot.

  • Drafts: It weakens the plant and is an invitation for pests such as spider mites.

  • Over-fertilization: The Calathea needs very little fertilizer.

Fertilizing once a month from April to October is sufficient.

  • Too cold location: 20 to 25 degrees Celsius room temperature is ideal, the plant should not get cold feet.

If you have done everything right with the care, the plant will thank you with a "prayer" every evening: As the portal

explains, the calanthea then folds its leaves together and unfolds them again in the morning.

It is therefore also called the Prayer Plant.

Dragon trees are the classic among indoor plants, as they get by with little water and relatively little light.

However, they should not be completely dark.

Practical: dragon trees clean the air.
