The Japanese Coast Guard announced the loss of eight sailors and the rescue of 14 others from the crew of a cargo ship that sank last night off the southwestern coast of the Japanese archipelago.

"A total of 14 crew members have been rescued so far. We still don't know their status and nationalities," a Coast Guard spokesman told AFP, noting that they were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The spokesman stated that search operations are continuing in cooperation with the South Korean Coast Guard to find the missing persons.

The 6,651-ton Jintian cargo ship registered in Hong Kong issued a distress call yesterday evening, at a time when it was 110 km west of the Dango Islands, a small remote and uninhabited archipelago located in southwest Japan.
