Very committed to the subject, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, made the wish on Wednesday for a law on the end of life in 2023, in order to offer “
a new freedom
”.
"
I hope we can legislate on the end of life in 2023
," she told the press, while a citizens' convention has been working on the issue since December 9 and until March 19.
"
We will watch their work very carefully
", but "
Parliament will fully play its role as legislator
", warned MP Renaissance, who went to the citizens' convention in December.
Yaël Braun-Pivet had invested under the previous five-year term in favor of Olivier Falorni's bill (MoDem and Independents group) authorizing euthanasia.
"A New Freedom"
A mission to assess the Claeys-Leonetti law, currently in force, has been launched at the National Assembly.
Since 2016, this law has provided for "
deep and continuous sedation until death
" for terminally ill patients with intractable suffering, but does not authorize euthanasia or assisted suicide.
"
I hope that we can succeed
", either via a bill "
if the government wishes to move forward on this subject
", or via a bill on the initiative of deputies, added the holder of the perch, underlining that "
a certain number of parliamentarians are very enthusiastic
".
“
It's something I really care about
” and “
it's a new freedom that we could offer to our fellow citizens
”.

If the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide brings agreement between the left and part of the center, it arouses strong reluctance on the right.
There is also a risk of reactivating a source of tension in society.
President Emmanuel Macron, who had initially seemed very willing to "
move
" on the end of life, seemed more withdrawn recently.
