Although they provide great comfort, fighting the heat with air conditioners can be very
expensive
.
Buying one today requires at least
$120,000
or
$150,000
, not counting
installation
.
And then they will have a big impact on summer electricity bills, even if the most efficient ones are chosen.
Faced with this, and in a context of removal of subsidies and rate increases, specialists recommended resorting to a
lesser-known option
that manages to cool environments for much less money.
It is a device that
does not require installation
and that today can be purchased for only
$25,000
, $35,000 or at most
$55,000
.
With the additional attraction that it manages to lower
the temperature by
several degrees using a
tenth of the energy
, or even less.
What is it about?
From
evaporative air conditioners
, also known as
air coolers
or
chillers
: some portable devices that do their homework using
water
, and that in many cases will make it possible to do without air conditioning (or at least use it for
less time
.

Evaporative air conditioners: how much they consume and what capacity they have to cool
"Evaporative air conditioners are a useful tool to
rationalize and reduce
cooling consumption in a
very significant
way ", considered
Leila Iannelli
and
Salvador Gil
, experts in Energy Efficiency from the University of San Martín (UNSAM).
"Their energy consumption is similar to that of
a simple fan
, that is,
less than a tenth
of a typical air conditioner," the specialists highlighted in a recent article titled
Interior thermal conditioning, low-cost measures for summer periods
.
Many evaporative coolers work, in fact, consuming only
50 or
55 W
, compared to
700 W
for one of the most efficient small air coolers on offer (Inverter).
"Of course, it is not an air conditioner. The air conditioner is only
capable of cooling
about
3ºC or 4ºC
, but for temperatures
below 30ºC or 31ºC
that is enough to feel
comfortable
, "they clarified.
Evaporating water to cool air: how air conditioners work
The
chiller
achieves its goal by imitating the natural process by which the
sea breeze
cools as it
blows over the sea
.
"They cool the air temperature through the
evaporation
of water," they explained to
Clarín
from
Midea
, one of the brands that offer them in Argentina.
"The equipment -they detail- takes the
hot and dry
air from the environment,
passes
it through
a filter
moistened
with water (natural or cold) and automatically cools the air due to the evaporation of the water."
The temperature of the air drops as it passes through the appliance because the water on the grill, evaporating,
absorbs the heat
.
And the low energy consumption is due to the fact that, for this to happen, the equipment only uses a fan and a small water pump.
Where does the water that constantly moistens the filter come out?
From a
tank
or reservoir that the user, every certain number of hours, must take care of
recharging
.
There are small coolers that hold
5 liters
;
others reach 7 or
10 liters
.
For their part, the most advanced models today come with features such as a
timer
, water level indicator, different operating modes,
remote control
and a programmable autonomy of
up to 7 hours
, according to what Midea said.
At an additional cost, some also have a
heat mode
so that the appliance also serves as a heater during the winter.
What to consider before buying an evaporative cooler: pros and cons
In addition to being more
accessible
, using very little energy and not requiring installation, experts highlighted as another
advantage
of air conditioners that they can work both indoors and
outdoors
, and without the need to keep doors and windows closed.
"For low-income homes, this characteristic makes them particularly suitable, since many times they do not have good
thermal insulation
, with which the air conditioners, in addition to consuming a lot, do not have their best behavior and performance," commented the UNSAM researchers.
They indicated, in turn, that the air conditioners reach their highest performance in
areas with a dry climate
such as
Salta
,
Córdoba
or the Andean region, although they clarified that "
even in the AMBA
they work well."
On the contrary, in places that are usually too humid, with
levels greater than 70% , or during
rainy
periods
, evaporative coolers may not be as effective, beyond producing some degree of well-being.

"Like standing or ceiling fans, they are excellent cooling devices
on not very hot days
, as well as for
hot nights
. At temperatures that do not exceed much more than 30 ºC or 32 ºC, they give very good results, a
sensation of freshness and comfort,
very pleasant and economical", evaluated Gil.
On the other hand, unlike an air conditioner, the air conditioner
does not allow you to regulate the temperature
of the room.
And, although unlikely, the water could eventually spill over.
"
Air conditioning
is much more expensive and consumes more electricity, but it achieves a much greater drop in air temperature," they compared from Midea, which also offers air conditioning.
And they added: "Those who choose an evaporative cooler pay
more than a fan for it
, but they understand that it offers an additional benefit (
cooling and humidification
), which, without reaching the cooling that an air conditioner produces, is somewhat
better than a fan
. "
How to get the most out of an air conditioner: practical advice
1. Better, in small spaces
.
They achieve a greater reduction in temperature.
2. Open doors and windows
.
Contrary to a traditional conditioner, the system works best if air circulation is allowed.
We must avoid the accumulation of moisture.
3. Clean the wet rack periodically
.
Also the water tank, to prevent dirt from collecting.
4. Renew with clean water periodically
.
For further cooling,
ice
can be added .
