President Yitzhak Herzog met today (Wednesday) with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the Commission's headquarters in Brussels.

This is the first high-level meeting between an Israeli senior official and a senior member of the Union since the establishment of the 37th government.

The President's House stated that during the meeting the two discussed relations between Israel and the European Union and further deepening of cooperation between the countries.

At the beginning of their meeting, the President said that "the European Union is an important element in our lives, and it is a potential strategic partner for Israel in many areas. We are also real potential strategic partners for Europe in extensive areas. We have common challenges, and we have so much to share in order to do good for the world, and a lot Subjects that we can work on together for the benefit of promoting solutions and helping humanity as a whole."

President Herzog specifically referred to the Iranian nuclear challenge and said: "One of the challenges facing us, and I think it is already clear that it is also facing Europe, is the fact that Iran is in Europe. Iran is fighting the citizens of Ukraine by providing drones and deadly weapons, endangering the world in its pursuit of nuclear capabilities , killing and torturing its citizens.

We believe that the time has come for Europe to take a very firm position on the Iranian issue, because it is a challenge not only for Israel, the region, the Middle East, but also for Europe and the entire world.

" "It starts with anti-Semitism but it never ends there.

As we approach International Holocaust Remembrance Day tomorrow, I think it is only symbolic that I am here with you, and we confirm our firm commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism and hatred of any kind."

Commission President von der Leyen congratulated the President and said: "I am sure that if we look into our relationship, the strongest expression of the friendship between Israel and the European Union are the 15,000 Erasmus students who came from the European Union to Israel, but also from Israel to the European Union. I think which is the clearest sign of our sons' friendship. It is wonderful to host you here."

Tomorrow, Herzog will address the European Parliament and Holocaust survivors at a gathering on the occasion of International Holocaust Day.

He will conclude the visit with a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and with the forum of the countries' ambassadors to the organization, and will brief them on the situation in Israel.
