The Meta company tonight (Thursday) reinstated the Facebook and Instagram accounts of former United States President Donald Trump, after two years in which they were suspended for violating the rules of social networks.
The meaning of the decision is that Trump will be able to reach his millions of followers on the networks while running for the country's presidency next year.
"In general, we do not want to interfere with open, public and democratic discussion on Meta's platforms - especially in the context of elections in democratic societies such as the United States," said Meta's President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg.
"In light of his violations, he is now also subject to increased penalties for repeat offenses - penalties that will apply to other public figures whose accounts have been reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest according to our updated protocol," he added in a post he wrote. will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation."
The decision came after last week the former president's lawyers petitioned Meta to allow his access to social networks.
This is when the petition, according to reports, came due to Trump's desire to raise his election campaign "into a higher gear".

Trump's accounts were closed on January 6, 2021, after the company believed that some of his posts encouraged his supporters to riot violently in the US Capitol to try to prevent Congress from confirming the results of the presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden.
About two months ago, Twitter restored Trump's account, which was also suspended due to the events.
The decision to return his accounts was made at the end of a survey conducted by Elon Musk on a platform in which he asked the public to respond to the survey on the return question.
In the survey, it was decided by a narrow majority to reactivate the account.
But since then, Trump hasn't tweeted, choosing to stick with his rival social media service Truth Social.

Trump's Facebook and Twitter accounts have 34 million and nearly 88 million followers respectively.
On Truth Social he has less than 5 million followers.
Trump used Twitter and Facebook extensively when he ran for president in 2016 and throughout his term.
