2023-01-25T21:57:19.508Z

It is still not a cold wave, since the intensity, extension and duration thresholds are not exceeded, but a normal situation "of full and rigorous winter", although temperatures will be between 3° and 5° below normal values

The cold anticyclonic weather in Spain will continue in the coming days, which will intensify over the weekend, advances Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Frosts will continue in large areas of the interior, although weaker on Thursday and Friday, but the minimum will drop again over the weekend, with values of -4° in the north and east.

"The daytime cold will also persist and in most of the interior it will not reach 10° and will remain below 5° in large areas of the northern half and mountainous areas," details the meteorologist, to reiterate that it is not a wave of cold ―the criteria of intensity, extension and duration are not met―, but a normal situation "of full and rigorous winter", although, yes, with the values below the average.

In addition, humid air will enter,

which will give rise to rains in the far north, highlands, the Mediterranean area and the Balearic Islands.

"The snow level will be low and important communication routes may be affected, especially on Friday in the far north," warns Del Campo.

This morning was once again very cold around the Pyrenees, with -12.6° at eight o'clock this morning in Sabiñánigo (Huesca) and -11.6° in Navascués (Navarra).

This Wednesday it will rain in the south of Andalusia and the Balearic Islands and it is possible that a few drops may fall in the northern and eastern thirds of the Peninsula, with an elevation that drops to between 500 and 700 meters.

As of this afternoon-night, an entry of a cold air mass, with a maritime route, through the N peninsular is once again consolidated.

With this situation, changes can be expected in the prediction for the peninsula.👇🧵 pic.twitter.com/8fe1PEKV64

On Thursday, with "the arrival of northerly winds laden with humidity", there will be rain and snowfall in the north of Galicia, Cantabrian communities, the Pyrenees and the surroundings of the Central and Iberian systems.

These precipitations will spread to Navarra, La Rioja and Castilla y León, and it is not ruled out that they can also reach the Community of Madrid, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, although "the probability decreases the further south".

The elevation will be low: between 400 to 800 meters in the far north and 700 to 1,000 in the rest.

"It may snow in mountainous areas and in low points in eastern Castilla y León, such as the Burgos and Soria plateau," says the Aemet spokesman.

Rain is also expected in the south of Andalusia and the Balearic Islands, with snowfall in Mallorca from 800 meters.

The minimums will rise, as the skies are cloudier and the wind blows intensely.

However, there will continue to be frosts, but less intense than those at the beginning of the week, in large areas of the interior.

"The highs will drop, it will be colder in the middle of the day, which added to the wind, which will blow strong in the north, east and the Balearic Islands, will increase the feeling of cold and leave a miserable day," says Del Campo.

On Friday the overcast skies will continue, with showers in the south of Andalusia and the Balearic Islands, without being able to rule them out in other parts of the Mediterranean area.

"But, above all, the rainfall will be concentrated in the northern third, especially in the north of Galicia, Cantabrian communities, north of Castilla y León, Navarra, La Rioja and the Pyrenees, with snowfall from only 400 to 600 meters ”, points out the expert, who warns that snowfall can affect cities like Pamplona and Vitoria and “hinder mobility”.

It will also snow in the north of Mallorca and there will be no major changes in temperatures, although the daytime temperatures will drop in the far north, where in many points, together with the mountainous areas of the rest of the Peninsula, it will not exceed 5° in the hours central.

We continue with a somewhat less cold week as of today, but almost as dry, with temperature anomalies of about 5 degrees below normal and rainfall approximately 10% less, except in the Cantabrian Coast, points in the Levant and the Balearic Islands.

The weekend, return to slightly cloudy skies in most of the country.

Of course, in the extreme north, south of Andalusia, southeast coast, Central and Iberian systems and the Balearic Islands there is a probability of precipitation, especially on Saturday.

"Throughout the day they will decrease and Sunday will be a day without rain, except in isolated points in the far north and the Balearic Islands," completes Del Campo.

The snow level will remain low, from 400 to 600 meters in the northern half, central area and the Balearic Islands.

Thermometers will drop again, with widespread frosts in the interior and below -4° in the north and east, and maximums below 10° in the interior and below 5° in the north and center.

"The temperatures on the weekend will be between 3° and 5° below normal values, an anomaly that in the northern half can reach between 5° and 10° below," says the Aemet spokesperson.

And how long will the intense cold last?

"Such low temperatures could soften at the beginning of next week, especially during the day, although the frosts will continue in much of the interior, they will be less intense," replies the expert.

In the Canary Islands, oblivious to this episode of cold, the trade winds will blow on Wednesday and Thursday, with gusts that can exceed 70 or 80 kilometers per hour, which will leave the sea in poor condition.

On Friday they will loosen up and there will be cloudy skies in the north of the islands, with possible rains, especially on the weekend.

Temperatures will also "drop somewhat."
