In an extract from a report on the Prix de Lausanne, on the 1987 television news, Claude Bessy comments:
“This boy is elegant, he has potential.
He has to stretch his knees in the jumps and it's not easy, because he is very tall, but we will follow him.
At the time, Claude Bessy directed the Paris Opera School of Dance.
She opened the doors for him.
This slender boy who had just performed the variation of
Don Quixote
without really knowing what to do with his legs was José Martinez, now director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
The Prix de Lausanne, where he had just won a scholarship, would cover the costs of his stay in Nanterre.
“Lausanne is the only competition I want to go to. If it hadn't existed, I wouldn't have been able to continue my career
,” says Jean-Christophe Maillot, director of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo and president of the jury this year.
The Prize, which is celebrating its 50th edition, will be held from January 29 to February 5 on the shores of Lake Geneva.
