Veteran foodie Wei Ling passed away at the age of 87

Veteran gourmet and food critic Wei Ling passed away at the age of 87.

Wei Ling said that he was a "ghost eater" and would study menus to learn foreign languages.

Wei Ling, formerly known as Mai Yiu Tang, was born on January 28, 1936. He is a native of Shunde, Guangdong. His English name is William, and he is called "Willie" for short. He is well-known, having made a cameo appearance in the 1995 movie "The House of Gold and Jade" and is widely known.

Wei Ling's grandfather sold silk in Kai Yi Long, Guangzhou, and his father, Mai Yunan, was engaged in the grain and oil business and opened Ming Long Bank.

Wei Ling is well versed in both Chinese and Western languages, and has excellent language skills. He studied in the primary school of a government Chinese school, and later entered King's College, where he obtained a degree in English from United College.

He once revealed to the media that his father had taken him to eat high-end restaurants since he was a child, and because "food" became the motivation, he learned foreign languages, including French, from the menu.
