Engolling – The voluntary fire brigade in Engolling (Deggendorf district) called for a somewhat unusual rescue operation at the weekend.
A dog got into a predicament from which it could no longer get itself out.
Local residents became aware of the four-legged friend through loud barking and alerted the animal rescue teams.

Fire brigade frees dog from sewer pipe: residents support with excavators
"A dog crawled about in the middle of a 20-meter-long sewer pipe and got stuck there," the fire department said on Facebook.
The rescue operation turned out to be more difficult than expected.
With shovels and pickaxes, the emergency services only made slow progress.
A local resident was able to help the fire department.
Without further ado he came by with his excavator, as

"With this and a lot of physical effort, the dog could be dug up and handed over to the owners safely," reports the fire brigade.
It took about two hours to free the golden retriever.
"We think he was after an animal," says Engolling's 1st Commander Josef Schober of the local newspaper.
