Dozens of demonstrators are still being held in China after protesting China's strict zero-Covid policy in late 2022, human rights organization Human Rights Watch said.

Some of them were detained without contact with relatives in unknown locations.

The US-based human rights organization called on China to immediately release all detainees and drop the charges against them.

The organization explained that anyone who dares to stand up for freedom and human rights as a young person in China pays a high price.

According to media reports, the Chinese authorities have detained an unknown number of demonstrators, including university students and journalists, in recent weeks.

In a video circulating online before her arrest, 36-year-old editor Cao Zhixin pleads, “Let's not disappear from this world.

Don't let us be taken away or arbitrarily sentenced for a crime."

In China, at the end of 2022, numerous people protested against the country's strict zero-Covid policy, in which even small numbers of infections led to curfews and mass tests.

In addition to calls for an end to the strict pandemic policy, calls for political change were soon heard.

Across China, protesters held up blank white sheets - a symbol of censorship.

The protests have hardly been mentioned in the Chinese state media to date.

However, in December, China eased its zero-Covid policy.

Subsequently, also due to increased travel movements for the Chinese New Year, the number of infections rose rapidly.
