The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced Thursday that it had "definitively" withdrawn its ambassador to Honduras following statements by President Xiomara Castro about the crisis the South American country is experiencing during the CELAC summit held in Buenos Aires.

"The Government has definitively withdrawn the ambassador of Peru in Honduras in response to the unacceptable interference in internal affairs of President Xiomara Castro in her intervention in CELAC, ignoring the constitutional Government of President Dina Boluarte," the Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

Speaking at the meeting on Wednesday, the Honduran president said Peru was undergoing a coup and recognized former president Pedro Castillo as that nation's "legitimate and elected" leader, demanding his immediate release.

The Peruvian government added that for now relations between the two nations will be maintained through business managers.

CNN has asked the Honduran government for its reaction on the matter and we are awaiting a response from the Foreign Ministry.

The government of President Boluarte has faced criticism from other leaders in the region this week for its handling of the ongoing political crisis and violent protests.

During his virtual speech at a session convened by the Organization of American States (OAS) this Wednesday, Boluarte had to give an account of the comments of the other Heads of State.

“I have listened to the interventions of my CELAC colleagues, I thank them for their concern and solidarity with Peru, with Peruvians, with the victims of violence, but I would also like to ask them: what is the solution that they propose? for violence?

Or a path to peace and democracy?

"I hope that our friendly countries in the region support the only solution to the crisis that is peaceful, constitutional and in accordance with the OAS tradition," he added.

Earlier this week and also speaking at CELAC, Colombian President Gustavo Petro questioned the arrest and dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo and mentioned "violent parliamentary coups" in reference to Peru.

Following Petro's comments, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry had to send a diplomatic note to the Colombian embassy once again criticizing the president's "interference" in domestic politics.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric also shared his concern about Peru's ongoing crisis, saying the death of more than 50 people in the country should "shock" the region.

"People who take to the streets to protest what they think is right end up being shot by those who should defend them," Boric said during the summit on Tuesday, and also urged a "change of course" in the neighboring country. .

Peruvian diplomats issued a response expressing concern and calling Boric's comments "disrespectful."

Prior to the CELAC meeting in Argentina this week, Bolivian President Luis Arce had also referred to Peru's ongoing crisis and said that the Peruvian people were "fighting to recover democracy", comments that also were considered as interference by the Government of Peru.

This Thursday, former President Pedro Castillo echoed the criticism against the Boluarte government and thanked the regional leaders for their support and their condemnation of "human rights violations" in Peru.
