Home design does not have to include only the newest and most popular items the market has to offer.

Rather, a combination of new and old creates an interesting design concept that has depth and succeeds in integrating the loves and memories of the residents within a functional and aesthetic space, which knows how to tell a personal story about the residents who inhabit it and cast character and meaning into their home.

Designers tell about five houses where they were asked to incorporate into the design a specific nostalgic item or a certain characteristic of the building that were precious and important to the hearts of the residents:

Character and meaning that no modern item could ever give.

"Our home first of all represents who we are and part of who we are is our history. Nostalgic items can be harmoniously integrated into the home and give it character and meaning that no modern item, this or that, can contribute in the emotional and design aspect at the same time," explains interior designer Karen Gans.

In one of the houses she designed, she incorporated a rustic wooden table that the owner of the house built with his own hands while he was a student at an art school.

"This special table was actually the anchor for the design of the study and the rest of the elements in the room were chosen accordingly. When there is meaning and connection to some item, the entire room takes on a unique character and uniqueness," says Ganes.

The table was given a place of honor in the room.

Its legs are square and massive and decorated with an iron band.

Above it, the designer hung a wooden beehive for books.

A wooden dresser was placed in the corner of the room and completes the design concept for the room with a warm appearance and a special character.

In an apartment in Tel Aviv designed and designed by 'Studio Dolo', the connection between the old and the new is found in every corner and creates a special Tel Aviv charm.

This is the home of a very senior security figure in Israeli history (her name is not allowed to be published).

It was important for the residents of the house to leave a souvenir of the house and not erase its history, by combining old with new.

The original staircase, made of wood and decorated with a different painted covering on each step, has been preserved and renewed by means of a one-of-a-kind airy iron partition that hides it a little from the central space but also gives it a sense of space.

"In working on the new design of the house, we decided to keep elements and materials from the old house and create an interesting connection between the old and the new. It was very important to us and the tenants to preserve the existing alongside the innovations and the result is simply magic. The connection between all the parameters in the house together with our story create a magical and special feeling." They say in 'Dolo'.

And not only the stairs guarded,

The designer Tzipi Yavetz chose to incorporate in the house she designed for her friend a table and chair that the two found together many years ago while wandering in a desert town in California.

The selected furniture was manufactured in the 1950s by the Heywood Wakefield company, which produced modern furniture under the influence of Art Deco from the 1920s to the 1950s.

"I designed the apartment for my friend who is a curator and art consultant, and from the very beginning of the work it was clear to both of us that these two pieces of furniture would find their place in the front. The combination of the new and the old creates interest in the space and gives character to the house, something magical and harmonious," she says.

The table is made of wood and it gives the space a warm and vintage look and completes the atmosphere in the house.

The antique furniture from around the world that was inherited

Ancient and of sentimental value.

In this house the large dining room table passed between three family members.

It was bought by the tenant's sister who personally imported it from Italy for herself.

The wooden table was used by her for 25 years and then passed to her mother.

When she passed away, the table moved to the fireplace and was incorporated into the design during a renovation he did in his home.

Next to the dining area is the round coffee table, two chairs and a wooden display case, which the family members brought from England almost 40 years ago after they were there on mission.

These are ancient items, about 200 years old.

"It was important to the tenants that this furniture be reflected in the house and be an integral part of the design. These are items of sentimental value to them and being so ancient they create a unique look in the space. And not just a look, but also a special feeling," says designer Ella Morgan.

The art must remain

The furniture was chosen with the intention of giving the main stage to the works of art.

In this house designed by the architect Marina Rechter-Robinstein for her painter friend, he asked that the design be derived from his works and provide them with a suitable background.

"I designed and planned an apartment for an artist for whom art is an integral part of the house. It is the soul for him. For me, the choice of furniture was made in order to match the colors of the art to the space, so that everything speaks in harmony. Furniture was chosen that continues to give art the front stage of the space. Together with the owner of the house, We chose where the details of the art would be placed and so little by little the overall picture of the space was completed," says Rechter-Robinstein.
