Less than four months before the Turkish presidential elections, the heads of the six opposition parties in the country are meeting today in Ankara in an effort to choose a common candidate on their behalf, who will face the incumbent President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Erdogan has been the president of Turkey for over 8 years.
Before that, he served as Chief Minister for 11 years.
He was behind the change of government in Turkey to a presidential regime and the transfer of the executive powers of the Prime Minister to the President.
In view of Turkey's difficult economic situation and Erdoğan's lagging popularity due to public fatigue with the Islamist leader who ruled Turkey for 20 years and the reduction of democratic space in it, the heads of the six opposition parties hope that cooperation between them and the election of a common candidate to face Erdoğan will enable a political transformation in the country.
The six parties established an umbrella body called the "Brit Haoma" against the "Brit Ha'am" of the ruling Justice and Development Party and the Nationalist Movement Party.
The "Nation Alliance" has already formulated a common platform for the government that will be formed, if the opposition wins the presidential elections.

It is not yet clear when the name of the joint candidate will be announced, but it is estimated that the identity of the candidate will be revealed by mid-February, so that the opposition can start an organized election campaign.
It seems that the leading candidate at the moment is the leader of the Republican and Social Democratic People's Party, 74-year-old Kamal Calchedrolo.
11 mayors of large cities, including Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir met with him recently to express public support for him.
Cooperation between the opposition parties already allowed them to defeat Erdogan's party and gain control of several large cities, including Istanbul and Ankara, in the municipal elections about four years ago.
