On video: Rabbi Shai Tahan (PR)
This coming Shabbat we will read in the synagogue Parshat Ba in which the Torah tells us about a plague of darkness.
In this blow, the Holy One, blessed be He, completely darkened the houses of the Egyptians and silenced their activities.
In addition, God asked Moses to send the Israelites seven days of great darkness - the Israelites will enter the houses of the Egyptians and reveal the hiding place where the Egyptians hide their jewelry and their silver and gold vessels.
and why?
So that when the Israelites left Egypt they would know where the Egyptians' jewels were and could take them in exchange for their hard work.
Rabbi Shai Tahan, head of the Sha'arei Ezra community and head of the Erzi HaLebanon teaching house, discusses in his weekly column a series of questions surrounding this divine teaching from the Israelites.
Rabbi Tahan leads his words to a critical element in the life of the Jew;
It is permissible and even desirable to have fun in this world - but it is important that the goal be for the sake of the Holy One, blessed be He, and for the spiritual goal.
