She stands for full perspective: Gröbenzell optician Christina Flegl has been making sure that people with visual impairments get the right glasses for 25 years.

Gröbenzell – One thing is particularly important to them: a really careful measurement of the eyes.

You can see her enthusiasm at first glance, her eyes sparkle and her face shines when the optician Christina Flegl talks about her work.

The 53-year-old has been running a practice for ophthalmic optics and optometry in Gröbenzell for 25 years.

Optometry is the study of measuring and evaluating visual functions.

The customers come not only from Gröbenzell, but also from far away, even from Austria, to improve their vision.

The practice is celebrating its 25th anniversary this Friday afternoon.

From Franconia

Christina Flegl was born in the Franconian Hof.

Already at the age of twelve Gröbenzell became her place of residence.

After training as an optician, she worked for a large chain of opticians in Munich for two years.

But the work there was not to her liking, "it was too superficial for me".

"I had a vision," she says.

Not the glasses, but the measurement, she wanted to focus on in her work and start her own business.

"Friends and acquaintances thought I was crazy at the time," she recalls.

But the 53-year-old was undeterred.

After successfully completing her master’s degree and the Master of Science in “Clinical Optometry” in the USA (this degree was not yet possible in Germany at the time), she dared to take the leap into self-employment.

Special glasses

Through her own story, she knew how important it is for the eyes to be looked at more closely.

"I was always tired, dead tired," she emphasizes.

Her husband, whom she met and fell in love with during her master's degree, found out why: she had an eye muscle imbalance that could be corrected with special glasses.

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular

FFB newsletter.)

She started her business when she was just 28 years old.

First in rooms on Kirchenstraße.

At first she worked here alone, or she was supported by her father, who sat on the phone and made appointments with customers.

And these were numerous.

The move

After eleven years, the space was therefore too small.

She now had several employees, and the practice moved to Puchheimer Strasse in almost twice the size.

Before a customer gets glasses here, their eyes are precisely measured.

The measurement takes around 75 minutes, and only then is the pair of glasses chosen.

In practice, among other things, the intraocular pressure can be measured, a digital retina scan can be carried out, 3D vision can be checked and, of course, the current visual values can be determined.

Christina Flegl is not only an optician and optometrist, she is also a wife and mother.

Her son was born 19 years ago, and her daughter three years later.

She continued her business anyway.

Initially supported by a childminder, one of her employees also took care of her children from time to time.

"It was a terrific phase," she recalls.

Today she is happy that the children are more or less grown up.
