This month there are cutbacks and so much more.

Garden fans have been looking forward to getting outside again all winter.

Indoors, some of the cultivation is already underway so that young plants can be placed in the frost-free bed a few weeks later.

But already in February there is some work outside in the garden, because after that it is too late for that.

February brings early spring and with Candlemas also a date when the days finally feel longer again.

By the end of February there will be 1.5 hours more daylight than at the beginning of the month.

This not only attracts the first insects and wild animals from the winter quarters, but also gardeners who can hardly wait for the new season.

In February, preparations are made for the coming garden year, and what is done now will be reflected later in the beautiful growth and lush flowering of the plants.

Also think about the regulation from paragraph 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, according to which there will be a ban on felling and removal for some areas from the beginning of March.

Because then the birds start to breed and animals should no longer be disturbed by large cuts or the felling of trees.

These tasks are scheduled for February in the garden:

  • Winter pruning: Ornamental trees and fruit trees are pruned in February.

The correct incision is important so that wounds grow quickly and rotten spots are avoided, reported the

    North German Broadcasting Corporation

    (NDR).

Anyone who is unsure what exactly is pruned to get the ideal growth form should look it up in the specialist literature, in this case pictures are more helpful than words.

For the rose cut, however, the forsythia blossom is usually given as a good time, i.e. the end of March.

  • Sowing in the bed or cold frame: Indoors can of course be preferred, but sowing is also pending outside in a bed that is still frosty.

Field beans and garlic are allowed in under the right conditions, and a little more vegetables are then sown outdoors from around the end of February, including carrots.

You can also fill the cold frame with seeds.

  • Cut back grass and flowers: According to "Servus", overwintering balcony flowers should be cut back by a third and placed in bright places with ten to 15 degrees Celsius.

Grasses also need to be cut back in mid to late February or early March, but it is important which ornamental grass it is, because not everyone needs the care measure.

At the end of February, the bed care is slowly coming up, the soil is then carefully loosened and, if necessary, upgraded with compost.

On frost-free days, you can still put bare-root plants in the garden, such as roses.

According to the "Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk", planting time is between October and April.

After that, container ware is a good idea, but root ware is often cheaper and had time to grow over the winter.
