2023-01-27T11:00:36.727Z

Five generations mark the last hundred years. How to identify each one and why they insist on giving them a name.

Each generation is marked by historical events, faces the challenges of daily life in a certain way and questions the conventions and rules of those that preceded it.

Demographers and researchers

assign terms to name a generation

in order to study their behaviors, family configuration, their marriage rates, their consumption habits and even their predilections when voting or defending certain causes in the long term.

Detractors maintain that this is a

generalization

, but it is already commonplace to listen to those who classify

millennials

centennials

,

baby boomers

or those of generation X,

who are they and how do you know which one you belong to?

The Silent

Generation

The "Silent" generation comprises people between the ages of 94 and 74.

Born between 1928 and 1948

, Time magazine was the first to coin the term in 1951 to refer to young people who reached adulthood in the interwar period and the Great Depression in the United States.

Many of its members are unaware that they are classified in this way.

They took his “silent” quality as a feature of his character.

They make up the oldest generation alive and top the list with the highest marriage rates.

According to the

Pew Research Institute

, 64% of this generation got married before the age of 33, a gap that grew progressively greater in comparison with their descendants.

Born between 1949 and 1968

, they are the generation that emerged immediately after World War II.

They owe their name to social science researchers who noted that there was a "boom" of births between the 1950s and 1960s in Western countries.

This generation experienced greater comfort compared to the two previous generations.

Several historical events that marked his adolescence and young adulthood were the fight for civil rights in the US, the sexual revolution and the beginning of the Cold War.

The Pew Research Institute explains that the peak period of the "boomers" was traced after there was a decline in fertility rates, thanks to

the advent of the birth control pill

.

Generation X

Members of Generation X are between the ages of 53 and 42.

Includes those born between 1969 and 1980

.

The "Gen X" distanced themselves from some of the values that their parents promulgated.

With a more pragmatic view of life, the expectations of this generation pointed to greater technological development.

The man had just reached the moon and the expectations placed in the technological field projected a prosperous future.

During the adolescence of Generation X, the anti-war movement and pop culture gained strength.

Some studies point to them as the first group of users who learned to communicate digitally after being adults.

Millennials or

Generation

Y

Millennials,

born between 1981 and 1994

, entered the labor market in the midst of

the 2008 crisis

and their relationship with their expectations and the trajectory of their progress is slower than that of previous generations.

For many, this is the first generation to question the mandates of motherhood and fatherhood and marriage.

According to the Pew Institute, only 28% of

millennials

got married before the age of 34.

In fact, it is expected that 25% of them, when they reach middle age (50) will continue to be single.

Although, in general terms, it is a group with a higher level of academic education than its predecessors, but the acquisition of their own home and the ability to save in the average millennial have significantly decreased.

They are probably the generation under 60 with the most

pessimism

when it comes to the economy and the possibility of success through entrepreneurship.

Along with the next generation,

centennials

, they express concern about ecology, work-life balance, gender issues and the importance of mental health.

Generation

Z

The youngest working - age generation to date comprises those

born between 1995 and 2010

.

In some surveys, the possibility that people born in 1994 are part of this group is raised, but half of the nineties are taken because it coincides with the commercialization of the Internet in homes at a massive level.

Because of this, they are considered to

be the first digital natives

.

Their most significant interactions are no longer concentrated mainly in person, but also through virtual spaces.

This is not the only thing that would mark a milestone in work habits and your priorities.

The Centennials or Generation Z were born along with technological milestones such as the commercialization of the World Wide Web and, years later, social networks.

This generation is entering the job market and planning to do it on their own terms.

According to

Adobe's Future Workforce Study

, an annual report from the US software company, 85% of the participants – all from this generation – answered that they are less likely to apply for a job

if the company does not disclose the salary range in the job offer

.

In Argentina, a survey carried out on centennials by the consultant

Grant Thornton

in September 2022 determined that for 44% of those consulted "the factor that interests them the most is the possibility of doing

home office

and having flexible work hours".

Regarding the expectations of academic training, the two younger generations choose with less reluctance to be educated through asynchronous virtual courses and not only in person in the traditional educational system.

It is estimated that they are less pessimistic than millennials, although the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic left on this and other generations remains to be seen.
