The complicity of part of the Brazilian armed forces with anti-democratic movements has come to light since the ransacking of places of power in Brasilia by supporters of the far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro on January 8.
In response, the new head of state, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has already dismissed some fifty senior military officers.
He even sacked the head of the army, Julio César de Arruda, last Saturday.
Experts say the leftist president has a "historic" opportunity before him to move beyond individual punishments and reduce the influence of the armed forces in politics.
An urgent task, because if the shadow of the military hovers over the civilian sphere since the end of the dictatorship in 1985, their influence has drastically increased under Bolsonaro.
