This is a record that has been steadily increasing for three years.
Electric scooters, as well as all motorized personal transport vehicles (EDPM) are claiming more and more victims in Paris.
According to a report revealed by our colleagues from BFMTV and confirmed by the Paris police headquarters in
Le Figaro
,
408 accidents have been recorded in the streets of the capital with these means of transport, whether private or free- service.
This resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to 459 others.
These figures have been on the rise since 2020. That year, 294 accidents and 323 injuries were recorded.
In 2021, the police headquarters had recorded 318 accidents, one death and 353 injuries.
A consultation in April
The dissemination of this report comes as Parisians must decide whether or not to maintain self-service scooters in the capital, during a vote on April 2.
Anne Hidalgo declared herself for “
that we stop
” in a recent interview with
Parisian
.
"
I will respect the vote of Parisians, even if it is contrary to what I would like
," she said.
At the end of September, the town hall had threatened the three operators Lime, Dott and Tier, which total a fleet of 15,000 vehicles, not to renew their contract.
This expires at the end of March.
Between accidents and users traveling in pairs or on the sidewalks, strewn with poorly parked scooters, the municipality is wondering about the “
cost/benefit ratio
” of scooters, as well as their “
environmental cost
”, had indicated David Belliard, the mobility and roads assistant.
22 dead in France
In a report published in November 2022, the National Academy of Medicine already warned of the risks involved in this mode of travel.
Last year, 22 accidental deaths due to motorized personal transport vehicles were recorded in the territory, compared to ten deaths in 2019.
Among the frequent injuries, lesions mainly affect the craniofacial extremity and the limbs, more particularly the upper limb.
These locations of injuries result from a forward fall which leaves the head, arms and forearms very exposed.
The skull is thus more often affected in scooter accidents than in bicycle accidents where the fall occurs laterally (74% against 43%).

The academy recommended, among other measures, to make it compulsory to wear a helmet, noting that it greatly reduces the serious consequences of accidents, even if it does not prevent all injuries.
Among the injured "
the wearing of a helmet was absent in nine out of ten cases
", she then pointed out.
