The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the expulsion of the Latvian ambassador in Moscow, and gave him two weeks to leave the country.
“The Latvian Chargé d’Affaires in Moscow, Atatsya Rutka, was summoned, and a note of protest against her country’s decision to downgrade diplomatic relations was handed over to her, and she was informed that the Latvian ambassador to Moscow, Maris Rekstens, should leave the country within two weeks,” the Russian Foreign Ministry was quoted by TASS news agency as saying.
The ministry stressed that the provocative approach of the Latvian authorities by lowering the level of diplomatic relations will have consequences, noting that full responsibility for the current situation rests with the leadership of the Latvian state.
Last Monday, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Regevichs announced that his country intends to reduce the level of diplomatic relations with Russia, starting from February 24.
