US does not rule out delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine

6.10 a.m .:

In addition to France, the USA is also open to the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine.

This was said by US President Biden's Deputy National Security Advisor, Jon Finer, on Thursday (local time) on US television channel MSNBC.

When asked if the US is considering supplying fighter jets, Finer said it hadn't ruled out any particular weapon system.

Support will be tailored to what Ukraine needs.

"We will discuss this very carefully," Finer said, referring to inquiries from Ukraine.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) ruled out the delivery of fighter jets after the promise of Leopard 2 main battle tanks on Wednesday.

Previously, the former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, had called for modern fighter jets to defend against the Russian war of aggression.

The allies should set up a strong fighter jet coalition, with US F-16s and F-35s, Eurofighters and Tornados, French Rafales and Swedish Gripen jets.

Melnyk is now Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine.

Numerous regions in Ukraine under Russian fire

5:27 a.m .:

After several Western countries promised to supply battle tanks to Ukraine, Russia is covering the country with a wave of new attacks, according to the Ukrainian military.

At least 11 people were killed in several regions, said a spokesman for state civil protection.

Air alert also accompanies the morning rush hour in the capital Kyiv.

There, people seek shelter in the subway stations.

First Ukrainian soldiers for tank training in Germany

4.35 a.m .:

The first Ukrainian soldiers have arrived in Germany for training on the Marder infantry fighting vehicle.

The group landed in Cologne on Thursday and should soon start training on the weapon system, as security circles explained to the dpa news agency in Berlin.

The training is part of the military aid for Ukraine, which is also to be given 40 martens.

The US is sending Bradley armored personnel carriers to the country attacked by Russia.

In addition, the federal government is following suit with the Patriot air defense system, which Washington had already promised to deliver to Ukraine shortly before Christmas.

In the meantime, the delivery of battle tanks was also decided.

In Germany, training on the Leopard main battle tank will soon begin.

According to media reports, France is open to the delivery of fighter jets

4.29 a.m .:

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) excludes the delivery of combat aircraft – according to media reports, people in Paris think differently about it.

"We have to examine requests on a case-by-case basis and leave all doors open," French National Assembly Defense Committee chairman Thomas Gassilloud said in London, according to British media reports.

"We'll see what happens next in the coming weeks because things are moving fast," Gassilloud said after talks with British colleague Tobias Ellwood and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

According to British media reports, Gassilloud stated that the delivery of fighter jets must not endanger French and European security and that the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine should not escalate.

Japan tightens sanctions against Russia

4:09 a.m.:

Japan is tightening its sanctions against Russia after the recent wave of missile attacks on Ukraine.

"Given the current situation in Ukraine and to contribute to international efforts for peace, Japan will impose export bans in line with other major nations," the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a statement.

The sanctions concern goods with which Russia could improve its defense capabilities.

The assets of three companies and 22 individuals are also to be frozen.

Selenskyji insists on further deliveries

4:01 a.m .:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his country’s need for further arms deliveries beyond the battle tanks that have now been promised.

“Russian aggression can only be stopped with adequate weapons.

The terrorist state will not understand it any other way," said Zelenskyj in his evening video speech on Thursday.

The most recent wave of Russian attacks a few hours earlier had shown this again, he stressed.

"Every Russian missile against our cities, every Iranian drone used by the terrorists is an argument for more weapons."

On Wednesday, the federal government decided that Germany would hand over 14 Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks to the Ukrainian armed forces as a first step.

Other countries should also receive permission to pass on the tanks made in Germany to the attacked country.

In addition, the United States wants to contribute Abrams main battle tanks.

Selenskyj thanked Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden for this – but also insisted on the additional delivery of long-range missiles, fighter jets and more artillery.

However, Scholz has ruled out the delivery of combat aircraft or even the deployment of ground troops.

UN nuclear regulatory agency reports detonations near Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

1:20 a.m.:

The United Nations nuclear regulatory agency reported several powerful explosions near the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine and again called for a security zone around the plant.

"Eight strong detonations were heard around 10 a.m. local time yesterday and there were more today," IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, Rosenergoatom, the operator of the Russian nuclear power plants, called Grossi's statements unfounded and a "provocation".
