On June 10, 1995, clouds overcast the skies of New York City.
Still, people flock to Central Park and spread out picnic blankets.
They wait for hours until the program finally starts: »Pocahontas«, Disney's latest animated film, open air in front of around 100,000 viewers.
It is probably the biggest film premiere in the world, the next blockbuster after »The Lion King«, as Disney hopes.
The film studio ventures into new territory.
Pocahontas, the favorite daughter of Powhatan Confederation leader Wahunsenacaw, is the first historical person to be portrayed by Disney in an animated feature -- as well as a non-white princess destined to wow audiences.
It succeeds.
The love story between the graceful young woman Pocahontas and the blond giant John Smith, whose life is saved by the chief's daughter when he is caught between the fronts of "settlers" and "Native Americans", grossed 346 million dollars worldwide.
"Pocahontas" is "responsible, accurate and respectful," said Disney Vice President Roy Disney.
"The film distorts the story beyond recognition," write Powhatan officials.
