Peter Powell, former chief of staff of the Czech army and chairman of the military advisory body to the top of NATO, will be the next president of the Czech Republic.
In a few months, Powell will replace the scandalous president and great friend of Israel, Milos Zeman.
An almost final count of the voters' votes shows that Powell, 61 years old, beat his opponent - businessman Andrey Babish by a large margin.
Powell, 68, received over 57% percent, while Babish received about 42%.
Powell has a clear western orientation - he supports Ukraine and the increase in military aid to it, the European Union, the leadership of the euro in the Czech Republic and same-sex marriage.
During the last days of the tumultuous presidential election campaign, the two contestants received threats on their lives.
Babish, who was the leading candidate at the beginning of the election campaign, failed to convince the Czechs with his pacifist message, which sought to reduce the Czech's involvement in the Ukraine war.
