Jerusalem on maximum police alert: a 13-year-old boy starred in another shooting and there are already 42 detainees after the deadly attack on a synagogue

In the last hours there was another episode of violence that left two injured, after the massacre on Friday in a synagogue in which 7 people were murdered.


The Israeli authorities decreed a state of maximum alert this Saturday after the shooting attack that left seven dead in Jerusalem, reported the Police, who killed the attacker and has arrested more than 40 people for this crime, in the midst of an escalation of violence in the area.

In the midst of that, today there was another shooting attack that left two injured and was carried out by a 13-year-old Palestinian boy, according to the Israeli police. 

"The Police Commissioner, Chief Superintendent Yaakov Shabtai, ordered to increase the alert to the highest level. As of this morning, the officers work 12-hour shifts," the Police said in a statement, asking the population to "report any suspicious person or object."

"As part of the investigation into the shooting attack, during the night (Friday) and morning (Saturday), the Jerusalem District Police arrested

42 suspects, some of them from the terrorist's family, relatives and close associates

Most were arrested at night after an Israeli forces patrol the home of the attacker, an inhabitant of occupied East Jerusalem, to "examine thoroughly the connection between each of the arrested suspects and the terrorist who carried out the attack, as well as the scope of their knowledge and/or participation," the police explained.

On Friday night, the gunman opened fire near a synagogue located in Neve Ya'akov, a Jewish settler settlement in occupied East Jerusalem, killing seven people and wounding three more, some seriously.

New peak of violence in the area

It is the deadliest attack since 2011, when an armed group crossed into Israel from Egypt's Sinai peninsula, killing eight Israelis.

The Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his Minister of National Security, the extremist and anti-Arab settler Itamar Ben Gvir, went to the scene but without making a statement to the press.

In the surroundings, several Jews observed the development of the first investigations while a group of Palestinians celebrated.

Although the identity of the assailant has not yet been officially revealed, the official press identifies him as a 21-year-old Palestinian with no prior history of terrorist offences.

The attacker drove near the synagogue, opened fire and attempted to drive away.

After a chase and shooting, the uniformed men shot him down and seized his weapon.

Arriving at the scene of the crime, paramedics from the Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom declared five people dead.

Five other injured people were taken to hospital but two died while receiving medical attention, including a 70-year-old woman.

"A 15-year-old boy was lying at the entrance to the street, shot in the upper body. We provided medical treatment and transported him to the hospital with his mother. He was immediately taken to the operating room," said paramedic Lior Shasha.

The teenager is hospitalized in serious condition and there are two other people in moderate condition.

Another shooting leaves two injured

An attack with a firearm causes two injuries in the City of David settlement, in occupied East Jerusalem, according to preliminary information from the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency services about the second attack of these characteristics in the city in less than 24 hours.

"The suspect in the shooting was neutralized," said the Police in a statement confirming this new attack, near the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, described as "terrorist", as they refer in Israel to any aggression committed by Palestinians.

Last night, a Palestinian killed seven Israelis while leaving Shabbat prayers in a synagogue in the Neve Yaakov settler settlement, also in occupied East Jerusalem.

A large police device has been deployed at the scene and an investigation is already underway, the police added.


"We quickly arrived on scene and saw two gunshot victims. A 47-year-old man and a 23-year-old man. They were fully conscious and had gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. We rushed them to intensive care units. and we took them to Shaare Tzedek Hospital. The younger man is in serious condition and the other is in moderate to severe condition," said one of the MDA paramedics.
