Socialist Party: towards a way out of the crisis between Olivier Faure and Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol

The Socialists, meeting in Marseille, are trying to find unity after the disputed vote of the new first secretary of the party.

The smoke is "not far from white": discussions advanced this Saturday within the Socialist Party meeting in congress in Marseille, to find a solution to the internal conflict between Olivier Faure and his rival Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.

A memorandum of understanding must even be submitted to the vote of the delegates at 2 p.m., according to those around Olivier Faure.

The mayor of Rouen, critical of the left alliance Nupes of which Olivier Faure is a craftsman, disputed for several days the victory of the outgoing first secretary (with officially 51.09%).

Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol says he embodies a central line, less pro-Nupes than Olivier Faure.

He does not hide his reluctance vis-à-vis LFI and an agreement that has disappointed many socialists.

Both sides are meeting with their supporters to talk about a possible deal.

Unite rivals into a leadership team

After a night of negotiations, "we have come 80% of the way, 20% remain", explained to the press Johanna Rolland, the mayor of Nantes, one of Olivier Faure's negotiators, on the second day of the congress which is being held at the Pharo Palace.

"I can't believe that we don't end up finding the goodwill" to conclude an agreement, she added.

The discussions notably concern Olivier Faure's proposal to integrate his rivals into the management team, but in recognition of his victory.

"Things have progressed really well, we discussed in the night, until 4 o'clock in the morning", specified Johanna Rolland.

“There were substantive exchanges.

We are in the finish of the negotiation, it must be finished in the morning ”, so that the delegates of the congress, from the federations, can finally vote to ratify the results.

“We are going to discuss this morning again”, indicated for his part the Parisian senator David Assouline, representative for Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who did not speak on his arrival.

"An hour ago, the smoke did not seem far from white," said MP Boris Vallaud, close to Olivier Faure.

But "there is an architecture to be built in respect of what the activists have expressed", a "balance of the balance of power" which translates into "thematic national secretaries" and "order in the organization chart".

If the two camps reach an agreement, "we make 80%" of the militants, recalls the entourage of the first secretary, since after a first vote on the orientation text, Olivier Faure had obtained 49% of the vote and the mayor of Rouen around 30%, ahead of a third candidate, the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin Hélène Geoffroy (around 20%).

Hélène Geoffroy wants to stay in the opposition

The negotiations were notably unblocked when the latter, who had not been able to maintain herself and had decided to support Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, indicated that she did not wish to integrate the management, but to remain in the opposition.

"They assume to be the minority, but are no longer with Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, which changes the situation" and the balance of power, explains a close friend of Olivier Faure.

"Our goal is to bring people together and not crush them", explained this same source, while the internal war in which the two camps are engaged has fractured the party and damaged the image of the PS, already weakened by the historic failure of its presidential candidate, Anne Hidalgo (1.7%).

But the relative of the outgoing boss of the PS stressed that among the activists of Olivier Faure, gathered on Friday evening, the tension was "strong", because they had "recovered" after the accusations of fraud in the vote formulated by Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol .

“Olivier Faure told the activists that he wanted an agreement”, because after all, “six months ago, we were in the same motion, with Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol”, underlined another supporter of Faure.
