Ukraine charges against the IOC decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral flag

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his opposition on Saturday to allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions under a neutral flag, as recommended this week by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

One of the advisors to the Ukrainian presidential office, Mikhailo Podoliak, has strongly charged against the decision of the IOC Executive.

“The IOC proposes to the world to promote violence, mass murder, destruction.

That is why he insists that Russian athletes participate in competitions as true 'ambassadors of death'”, he has criticized on his Twitter account.

Podoliak has affirmed that it is not possible to separate sport and politics and that for this reason, with his decision, the IOC promotes "Russian anti-human policies".

The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) has supported the IOC statement, which recommends the readmission of Russian and Belarusian athletes under a neutral flag and if they have not "actively" supported the war in Ukraine.

“We share the firm belief, within the Olympic Movement,” says ANOC in a note, “that athletes should not be prevented from competing on the basis of the passport they hold and that a path should be explored for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to competition under strict conditions.”

Von der Leyen: "We are next to Ukraine without any conditions or buts"

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this Saturday, before the summit between the EU and Ukraine to be held next week in Brussels, that the government of Volodimir Zelenski, the Ukrainian president, has the support unconditional support of the community bloc against the Russian invasion.

"We are on the side of Ukraine without any conditions or buts," said the head of the executive arm of the European Union today at an act of her party, the CDU, in Duesseldorf (Germany).

“[Ukraine] is fighting for our shared values, it is fighting for respect for international law and for the principles of democracy, and for this reason Ukraine has to win this war,” she added.

Von der Leyen and the rest of the leaders of the European Union will hold a summit with the Ukrainian government on February 3 in Brussels, as scheduled.

Volodimir Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, who has only left his country once since the Russian invasion began on February 24, is invited to it.

He went to meet his US counterpart, Joe Biden, in Washington last December in a meeting that ended with the US executive's announcement that he would send long-range Patriot missiles to kyiv.

Russian state TV mocks tanks the West will send to Ukraine

"Cats without teeth", is how Russian state television has renamed the Leopard tanks that will be supplied by Germany to increase the Ukrainian defense in the war.

In the video that accompanies this post you can see the presenters of the Rossiya-24 channel using graphics that represent a fictitious battle between the Russian T-90 tanks and the Germans.

The presenter assures that half of the Leopards would be destroyed by Russian fire, even before reaching the battlefield.

"The result will be inevitable as soon as the German steel beasts are within firing distance of our T-90 tanks, due to their range and rate of fire, they would burn more than half of the enemy vehicles," said the presenter.

What has happened in the last hours

On the 339th day of the war started by Russia against Ukraine, these are the key data at 12:00 this Saturday, January 28:

A Russian bombardment against a residential building in the province of Donetsk causes at least three deaths.

A Russian bombardment against a residential building in the city of Kostiantinivka, in the province of Donetsk (eastern Ukraine), has caused the death of three people this Saturday and has caused two others to be injured, as denounced on Telegram by the governor , Pavlo Kirilenko.

Ukraine is aiming to get a first shipment of 24 fighters from international allies.

Two battalions with 12 combat aircraft each.

This is the new military aid package that the Ukrainian army intends to get from its international allies.

The 24 fighters – ideally they should be American F-16s – would represent only an urgent first phase in a new chapter of the delivery of weapons to the country invaded by Russia: that of aerial fire.

The figure was provided to EL PAÍS by Colonel Yuri Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force.

The Russian deputy foreign minister will meet the new US ambassador in Moscow next week.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, will hold a meeting with the new US ambassador to Moscow, Lynne Tracy, next week, according to what the official Russian agency RIA publishes on Saturday.

Tracy arrived in Moscow earlier this week.

Scholz asks the Germans to trust the decision to send tanks to Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has asked citizens to trust his government's decision to supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks and has promised to always keep Germany's “security” in mind.

Scholz has acknowledged that many citizens are "very concerned" because they want the war in Ukraine "not to come close" and for the German government "not to lose its nerve", as he said in a programmed video broadcast on the day he leaves for a tour of Latin America.

“Trust the Government!

Trust me too!

We make decisions that are always considered and coordinated at the international level ”, he pointed out in relation to the decision announced this week.

Scholz asks the Germans to trust the decision to send tanks to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz asked citizens this Saturday to trust his government's decision to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and has promised to always keep Germany's "security" in mind.

Scholz has acknowledged that many citizens are "very concerned" because they want the war in Ukraine "not to get close" and for the German government "not to lose its nerve", as he said in a programmed video broadcast on the day he leaves for a tour of Latin America.

“Trust the Government!

Trust me too!

We make decisions that are always considered and coordinated at the international level ”, he pointed out in relation to the decision announced this week.

Scholz has stressed that, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his government has always been guided by three main lines: do "what is necessary" to support Ukraine, avoid an escalation - since "there cannot be a war between Russia and NATO”—and, finally, acting in coordination with Germany's allies, particularly the United States.

The supply of main battle tanks, which follows previous decisions to supply howitzers, air defense systems and light tanks, has also been adjusted to these three principles.

"Our goal is clear: Russia cannot get away with changing borders by force," the foreign minister said.

"I promise you that we always keep in mind the security of Germany," he insisted.

According to a survey released this Friday by the ZDF public channel, 54% of German citizens believe that the decision to send battle tanks to Ukraine is correct, compared to 38% who oppose it, a result similar to that shown polls published over the past week.

While support for arms shipments to Ukraine is particularly high among Green voters, it is rejected above all by supporters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) formation and the leftist Die Linke.

About half the population is concerned that the delivery of tanks to kyiv increases the risk of a direct military confrontation between Russia and the West, a fear particularly pronounced in areas that correspond to the former East Germany.

Europe and the United States prepare the ground to discuss whether to send fighter jets to Ukraine

By

Silvia Ayuso

from Brussels.

The option of sending fighter jets to strengthen Ukraine's position in the war is beginning to emerge in Washington, European capitals and diplomatic circles in Brussels.

Although there are still no firm proposals on this new leap forward in Western support for kyiv, after the agreement to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and the firm request of the Government of Volodimir Zelensky to supply him with planes, the next debate on the table will be about whether it is necessary to send now also, as kyiv requests, combat planes.

Ukraine does not hide its desire and, in fact, has already made it explicit on more than one occasion.

With special insistence in recent days, after winning the battle of the tanks and getting Germany, the manufacturer of the vehicles longed for by kyiv, to give up on the matter.

For this reason, the discussion of the fighters has not surprised any European capital, not even Washington.

Although it is not yet officially on the agenda as a topic for future international meetings, several appointments are approaching in which few doubt that the combat planes for Ukraine will sneak into the discussions: only in the first half of February, there are several meetings of the EU - including one in Kiev - at the highest level, as well as meetings of NATO and international allies.

In any case,

One of the keys is held by the United States, which, as the manufacturer of the plane most in demand by kyiv, the F-16, has the power of veto over its delivery, just as Berlin had over the Leopard 2. And Washington Although until now it has not given the green light, it avoids closing any doors, in a strategy that sounds a lot like what happened with the tank debate, which until not so long ago also seemed a taboo subject both for Germany and for the rest of the international community.

The Kremlin closes the Sakharov Center, a cultural space in defense of human rights and critical of the invasion of Ukraine

Russia has decided to close the Sakharov Center, the last bastion of freedom for opponents of the Kremlin, defenders of human rights and critics of the military campaign in Ukraine.

“In a country that is not free, there cannot be an island of freedom.

We live under a dictatorship," Sergei Lukashevski, director of the center in exile in Berlin since the start of the war, told the Efe news agency.

The Sakharov Center, founded seven years after the death of the Nobel Peace Prize winner (1989), hosts exhibitions, conferences, concerts, films and plays, the vast majority of which are independent.

In addition, its two buildings house a library and two permanent exhibits, one on the life of Sakharov and the other on the history of the dissident movement in the Soviet Union.

The surrounding garden is dominated by a fragment of the Berlin Wall.

The center's days are numbered, since the Prosecutor's Office has decided to evict the historic institution on the grounds that it represents a threat to security and the constitutional order in this country.

“The accusation that we undermine state security is ridiculous.

What happens is that, since the Kremlin is terribly afraid of freedom of expression, we are a dangerous platform,” says Lukashevski, fined in absentia this Friday with 3 million rubles (about $43,000).

He recalls that his space has brought together over the years people who disagree with the politics and the prevailing mood in Russia, based "on xenophobia, chauvinism, the repression of human rights and contempt for human dignity" .

First it was the turn of the main Russian NGO, Memorial;

earlier this week to the oldest, Moscow's Helsinki Group, and now to the most influential.

In this case, the excuse is a new amendment stipulating that foreign agents cannot receive state funding either, which allowed the Moscow City Council to terminate the lease and issue the eviction order.

The eviction, which comes on top of the 5 million ruble (more than $70,000) fine the organization received in December, "is the first step towards liquidation," according to its director.

Although like the rest of the liquidated organizations, which will continue to work, he admits that the activities of the Sakharov Center are closely linked to the building that houses it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "does not need civil society, that is, an independent voice that denounces human rights problems," he says.

“Even more so in wartime conditions, in which a multitude of questions can be asked.

Is the war just?

What happens to the hostages in the occupied territories?

What about the Ukrainian prisoners of war?

The State does not want to answer with the truth, ”he underlines.

Lukashevski believes that Russia has already crossed the red line and has turned into a "typical personalist dictatorship."

"A regime that is based on force, that controls society through fear, where there is no political alternation and a single person runs the State almost alone for more than 20 years is a dictatorship," he says.

He considers that "in Russia you can practically not go out on the streets, there is no independent press, there is no freedom of expression or assembly, and the last levers of freedom have been eliminated."

The Russian deputy foreign minister will meet the new US ambassador in Moscow next week

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday that the arrival of the US diplomat would not improve relations between Washington and Moscow over what the Kremlin considers a "hybrid war" against Russia, referring to its military support and financing from the US to Ukraine.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have been reduced to a minimum since the Kremlin troops launched the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, that is, an imperialist aggression against a sovereign country.

(AFP)
