The climate activists from the "last generation" do not threaten Germany's basic democratic order, according to constitutional protection officials.

There are attempts by left-wing extremist groups to influence the "last generation", said the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, on Deutschlandfunk.

"But as of today, I can say in agreement with all state offices for the protection of the constitution - also in Bavaria, also in North Rhine-Westphalia - that we do not yet see sufficient indications of a threat to the free-democratic basic order."

Haldenwang had already said in November that he did not see the climate activist group as a case for observation by his authority because it was not directed against the basic order.

From the Union he had been criticized for it.

In the meantime, there had been adhesive campaigns at airports by the group and massive protests from various movements against opencast coal mining in the hamlet of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Haldenwang said: "It is indeed worrying that on this issue of climate protection, but also on other issues in other spectra, it is now possible for extremists to march together with citizens who are actually only interested in politics, or for citizens who are politically interested not to do so more delimitation.« The Office for the Protection of the Constitution must take a closer look: »Where does extremism begin, and where does the claiming of the rights guaranteed by the Basic Law simply end?«

At the same time, Haldenwang made it clear that people on the other side of the political spectrum were rediscovering immigration to Germany as an issue.

After the partly right-wing extremist protests against the state during the corona pandemic, the President of the Federal Office said that it was evident that new topics were being sought.

"And we can already see that people are pouncing on the topic of migration again." With the current high number of refugees, this topic will become more important again.

“That could be a topic that will bring even more people onto the streets after all.”
