A new incident of US police violence sparked a protest wave, during which hundreds of people took to the streets in New York City, to demand an end to the criminal practices of police officers against minorities of African and Latino origin.
Protests took place this time to demand justice for a young man of African descent (Tire Nichols), who was beaten to death by five police officers in the American city of Memphis, to be the latest victim of American police violence.
The demonstrators demanded, according to US media, to “end the use of force by the police,” and carried phrases reading “killer policemen” and “justice for Tyre Nichols.” However, it seems that this justice will not be achieved in the absence of decisive decisions by the US administration and the large divisions regarding the authorities. Granted to the police on bipartisan lines.
Washington Post writer Perry Bacon Jr., commenting on Nichols' killing, said: This crime is only a reminder that we have to change the police system in the United States, pointing out that the new incident is nothing but a terrible example of police brutality.
Bacon made it clear that firing and charging the police officers who killed Nichols is not evidence that the police system is functioning well. The hands of officials representing the US government in a country that claims to be the world's leading democracy.
The data indicates that more than a thousand people are killed annually by the American police, as this number exceeds the number of people who are officially executed after extensive procedures of trials and appeals, indicating that police killings are much easier, and often target poor minorities, including blacks and Latinos.
After a series of crimes committed by the American police against African Americans, including George Floyd, Breonna Tyler, and many other adults and even children, demands escalated to stop funding the police or dismantle their devices, but the political divisions between the two main parties in the United States, the Republican and the Democratic, stood as an obstacle to the enactment of new laws. Or take decisive decisions to end US police violence and practices against civilians from minorities.
Here, Bacon emphasized that the police system in the United States is not working, and everyone is aware of this fact, and American politicians, whether Republican or Democrat, must do everything to stop the killings committed by policemen instead of continuing to play political games on the lines of life and death.
