Kyiv – Andriy Melnyk has suggested that Berlin should supply Kyiv with a submarine in the Ukraine war.

“Germany (Thyssenkrupp) makes one of the best submarines in the world, the HDW Class 212A.

The Bundeswehr has six such submarines.

Why not send one to Ukraine?” tweeted Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister on Saturday (January 28).

"Then we can drive the Russian fleet out of the Black Sea," he added.

Melynk, former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, prefaced his proposal with the words, "Hey guys, I know I'm going to start a shitstorm with this, but I have another creative idea."

US government on possible fighter jet delivery: "Do not rule out any specific weapon system"

Melnyk had previously called for modern fighter jets to defend against the Russian invasion of his country.

The allies should set up a strong fighter jet coalition, with US F-16s and F-35s, Eurofighters and Tornados, French Rafales and Swedish Gripen jets.

After the promise of Leopard 2 main battle tanks, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) ruled out the delivery of fighter jets, and FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann also reacted skeptically.

The US, however, does not rule out fighter jet deliveries.

Jon Finer, Deputy National Security Advisor to US President Joe Biden, said on MSNBC that no specific weapon system had been ruled out.

Support will be tailored to what Ukraine needs.
