The Chairman of the Finance Committee, MK Moshe Gafni, added: "I congratulate Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for the government's decision to finally cancel the 'Lieberman Tax' on the one-time tools intended to harm first and foremost the ultra-Orthodox sector. This was one of our commitments that we made with The establishment of the government, and indeed last week in the finance committee we passed the budgetary source for the cancellation of the tax and today it has been finally canceled and I am happy about that."
The previous finance minister, Avigdor Lieberman, was the one who imposed the tax on the disposable dishes.
Following his decision, starting in November 2021, a purchase tax was imposed at the rate of NIS 11 per kg on plastic utensils and NIS 3.3 per kg on disposable paper utensils containing plastic.
Silman opposed the repeal of the tax
The one who opposed the abolition of the tax, is the Minister of Defense and the Environment, Idit Silman.
As you remember, Silman was part of the coalition in the previous government that imposed the tax on disposable dishes.
Minister Silman reasoned: "I thank Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for the decision today at the cabinet meeting to bring an alternative within six months together with Finance Minister Bezalel Smutritz to reduce the consumption of disposable dishes. We will formulate a benevolent and correct alternative for all citizens of the State of Israel."

The minister added: "From the beginning the State of Israel should have led a gradual and correct course of change that creates processes and not to guide a decision that arouses antagonism towards a certain public. Since the tax has proven itself and resulted in a significant reduction in consumption and in reducing the environmental and health damage caused by the use of disposable tools and out of a commitment to the environment and public health there is no Abolish this taxation without a proper alternative."
