Opinion The world refuses to take sides Israel today

2023-01-29T07:10:11.978Z

Some throw gold at the world and expect it to intervene in the struggle going on among us, in view of the government's plans. It is worth realizing that the world has far more important and urgent problems in his eyes

For decades, leaders and countries around the world have held the opinion that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the source of the Middle East's problems, and is a major factor in the instability that prevails there and also in the terrorism that flows from it to other parts of the world.

From this it will be understood the pressure exerted on Israel to flex and give up, as if in this lies the key to resolving the conflict, as well as ensuring stability and prosperity in the entire region.

But in August 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and created a crisis that led to the Gulf War, and later also to the collapse of the Iraqi state that was occupied by the US. At that time, it became clear to the world that there are other problems in the Middle East besides the problem of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and these are not only independent of him or stem from it - but even more pressing and dangerous than it.

This insight was strengthened following the terrorist attack of September 11, which had nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - after all, al-Qaeda, and subsequently ISIS, chose to focus their terrorist attacks on Arab countries and the United States, and seldom acted against Israel.

In the meantime, the Middle East has become a disaster-stricken region, but what is interesting is that its rulers see Israel as part of the solution to the region's problems, and not as a source of its problems as in the past.

These rulers want a strong Israel, capable of helping them deal with the challenges they face.

Needless to say, they have no interest in what we do at home, and certainly not in questions of the independence of the judicial system or the principle of separation of powers, which have never occupied them.

From this one can understand the hearty reception with which the Arab countries welcomed the new-old prime minister of Israel.

The same goes for the rest of the world, starting with African countries, going through the countries of the Far East and South America and ending with Russia and China.

That leaves Europe and the USA, who also have no time to deal with Israel's internal issues. For Europe, not only the future of Ukraine hangs in the balance - but the future and even the independence of the countries of Eastern Europe, and even the very existence of the European Union, on which all of them may Russian achievement in Ukraine to cast a heavy shadow.

Europe and the United States, drawn into a frontal confrontation with Russia and China, today more than ever need Israel and the technological and military power it possesses, hence the warm embrace that the American administration gives Netanyahu, contrary to all assessments and expectations.

In our places, there are still those who throw their gold at the world and expect it to intervene in the struggle that is currently going on among us, in view of the plans of the new government.

But it is appropriate that both those who push for revolutions and change and those who go against them realize that the world has other problems, and that these are much more important and urgent in his eyes than our domestic struggles, to which he does not attach too much importance in any case, and in which he does not think of choosing a side.

It is appropriate, however, to attribute importance and weight to two communities, and not necessarily countries - the global business community and the Jewish communities around the world.

As we know, the business world does not shy away from investing in China or Turkey, because before its eyes there are considerations of profit and loss.

However, investment in Israel is not about production lines in huge factories that produce products based on western knowledge and technology.

For us, it's about investing in research, development and human capital.

They need the inherent advantage that the Israeli ecosystem gives them, and it is important to maintain this advantage.

As for the Jewish communities around the world - they are less significant to us than before, both due to the dwindling potential for immigration, and due to the fact that the countries in which they live are currently comfortable for Israel, and that there is no need for a Jewish lobby to bring them to support us.

But the importance of the Jews of the world is a derivative of our perception of ourselves as the state of the Jewish people, the state of the Jews all over the world.

And yet the struggle for Israel's future will be decided here between us, while the wider world will remain, as before, watching from the sidelines.
