The one-time tax, approved by the Bennett-Lapid government, was canceled today (Sunday).
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who promoted the move, said, "We promised and kept it. I call on the citizens of Israel to check with the retailers and container owners the one-time price reduction, the fight against the cost of living is a fight for all of us."
In accordance with the decision promoted by former Minister of Finance Avigdor Lieberman and former Minister of the Environment Tamar Zandberg, as of November 2021 a tax of 11 NIS per kg is imposed on plastic utensils and 3.3 NIS per kg on disposable paper utensils containing plastic.
Aryeh Deri welcomed the move.
"As we demanded in the coalition agreements, the government has now abolished the tax on the disposable utensils that have become a symbol of the deliberate harm to the ultra-orthodox population," he claimed.
"I thank Finance Minister Smotrich and the ministers who supported and expect the marketing chains to lower the prices."

This is a neutral tax that applies to all layers of the population, on imports and local production based on the weight of the products.
The purpose of the program was to reduce the use of single-use plastic utensils, with the aim of reducing the negative phenomenon - and unique in its scope in Israel - of using single-use plastic utensils and aligning with the practice in other advanced countries in the world that take similar steps.
At the same time, the tax provoked opposition mainly from the ultra-Orthodox, a population that mostly uses a large amount of disposable utensils, also for kosher reasons and the suitability of these for both dairy and meat foods, but mainly due to the size of the families in the ultra-Orthodox sector.
The Ministry of Finance announced at the beginning of the month that the state is expected to lose 330 million shekels following the repeal of the HDF law. To finance the loss of state revenues, the rate of tax provision for the compensation fund for war and drought damages will be reduced.
