The Swedish key: Erdogan hints that he will only allow Finland to join NATO | Israel Today

The Turkish president made it clear that he intended to send a message to Finland that "struck Sweden" with shock, thereby effectively driving a wedge between the two new candidates.

The Turkish president yesterday sent an amorphous message that he would veto Sweden's joining the NATO alliance, but on the other hand hinted that he would allow the entry of neighboring Finland. The two countries recently submitted a request to join the defense alliance in view of the fear that Russia would try to bite into their territories as it recently did with Ukraine.

"We will send a message to Finland [regarding its candidacy] that will stun Sweden," Erdogan said in a recorded interview with "Reuters" today (Sunday), without elaborating.

It is believed that this is a strong hint that it will allow Finland to join the ranks of the organization, as part of the divide and rule strategy that will isolate its neighbor to the west and lead to various concessions that Turkey is interested in.

In the past, Sweden and Finland made it clear that they would try to join the organization together.

Turkey, as a member of the organization, can thwart this, and in recent months has set demands regarding anti-Turkish Kurdish exiles who it claims are terrorist operatives who have found refuge in these countries.

Recently, the authorities in Sweden allowed demonstrations against Turkey to be held in the framework of which Koran books were burned, which ignited the anger of the ruler in Ankara, who only recently called ahead the presidential elections and will probably ride the anti-Swedish wave all the way to the polls.
