.: In the Ukraine war, the heavy fighting could shift to an area that has so far been largely spared from hostilities: Crimea.

A high-ranking former US military officer assumes this.

“The crucial terrain for this war is Crimea.

The Ukrainian government knows it cannot be satisfied with Russia maintaining control of Crimea," former US Army Europe commander Ben Hodges said, according to

.

In the coming months, Ukraine will create the conditions for the eventual liberation of Crimea, Hodges continued.

He stressed that the country will never be safe or able to rebuild its economy as long as Russia occupies Crimea.

Crimea, illegally annexed by Vladimir Putin in 2014, plays a crucial role for the Russian armed forces.

It served as a launch pad for the Russian invasion last February and is an attack base for Russian aircraft and warships.
