The chances of adding the Iranian "Revolutionary Guards" to the European Union's terror list are increasing after Germany and France changed their position on the matter and now support the move.
The "Financial Times" reports that Berlin and Paris withdrew their opposition to the move, which stemmed from fear of its consequences for the continuation of negotiations between the international community and Iran on the nuclear deal.
The newspaper notes that this change of position will effectively put an end to efforts to revive the nuclear agreement.
Germany and France were partners in the negotiations with Tehran on the nuclear deal.
Before the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union last week, the Commissioner for Defense and Foreign Affairs of the Union, Joseph Borrell, announced that it is impossible to add the "Revolutionary Guards" to the terrorist list without a sentence against this body in a court of one of the 27 members of the Union.
Now, the "Financial Times" reports, the Union's legal department is examining ways to circumvent this obstacle and allow the declaration of the Shifts as a terrorist organization.
An opinion on the matter should be presented within three weeks.
Iran warned that the addition of the "Revolutionary Guards" to the European Union's terrorist list would have "devastating consequences", including on the European presence in the Persian-Arabian Gulf region.
