The leader of the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) group, Facundo Jones Huala, was arrested this Monday in the town of El Bolsón, province of Río Negro, in southern Argentina, the local police reported in a statement. .
On Jones Huala weighed a blue circular from Interpol, intended to obtain more information about the identity, whereabouts or criminal activities of a person, because he had been a fugitive from the Chilean Justice since 2022.
Chilean government confirms the arrest of a Mapuche leader
The Mapuche leader had been sentenced in Chile for the crimes of "arson and illegal possession of a firearm", for events that occurred in December 2016 in the commune of Río Bueno, in the Los Ríos region.
The Supreme Court of that country had rejected a ruling that granted the benefit of probation to Jones Huala.
According to the report of the Police of Río Negro, Argentina, the arrest occurred after several months of investigation and the information provided by some witnesses who identified the leader of the RAM.
The man was hiding in a house at the time of his capture, the statement said.
For its part, the Government of Chile, through the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, said that they want Jones Huala to be extradited.
