On the map: 6 Israeli restaurants entered the prestigious 50 Best list Israel today

The prestigious BEST 50 restaurant ranking sponsored by San Pellegrino published the list of the best restaurants in Africa and the Middle East for 2023 • Israel stars in the ceremony with 7 restaurants • Tomer Tal's George and John in the top ten


A significant achievement for Israel in the culinary field was recorded tonight (Monday) at an international ceremony held in the Emirates:

six Israeli restaurants were ranked among the 50 best in the Middle East and North Africa in the prestigious list, which is published every year under the auspices of the San Pellegrino water brand.

The ranking reviews 50 outstanding food destinations from 19 countries: from Morocco in the west to Iran and Oman in the east.

During the ceremony, chef Shiral Berger, who leads the elite vegan restaurant in the Levinsky OPA market, also came up to receive the One To Watch award for 2023 (restaurants worth following), which she announced she had won about two weeks ago.

At the festive ceremony that took place this evening in Abu Dhabi, the most impressive achievement was won by Chef Tomer Tal's George and John restaurant, which was ranked in the top ten in the list, in sixth place.

Chef Raz Rahab's OCD restaurant was ranked 14th on the list and even won the prestigious Sustainable Restaurant Award - an award given to it for operating in an admirable and exceptional manner in sustainable ways that benefit the environment.

The other Israeli restaurants that entered the list are: a restaurant by chef Yuval Ben Naria which won the 24th place on the list, Animer by chef Hillel Tavkoli was ranked 32nd, Melgo Malabar restaurant by chef Motti Titman was ranked 40th on the list and the honorable 48th place was won by Basta restaurant by chef Elon Amir.

The prestigious Best 50 Restaurants ranking sponsored by San Pellegrino has existed for two decades and is one of the most respected in the culinary world today.

The list is determined by a panel of more than 1,000 experts from around the world and presents a broad picture that includes leading culinary destinations and gastronomic trends at the global level.

About ten years ago, the main ranking of the 50 best restaurants in the world was expanded into sub-lists by region, including: the 50 best restaurants in Asia and the 50 best restaurants in Latin America.

Last year, the list of the fifty best restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa was also launched for the first time, so six Israeli restaurants were ranked in the coveted list: Raz Rahab's OCD restaurant was ranked in third place, Chef Tomer Tal and his restaurant George and John in ninth place, the Basta restaurant In 14th place, Animar by Hillel Tavkoli in 17th place, Pescado by chef Yehi Zino in 24th place and Melgo and Melbar by chef Moti Titman in the respectable 40th place.

The ranking of this list reflects the best culinary experiences of 250 anonymous experts in the field from across the Middle East and North Africa.

Its purpose is to create a list of desirable culinary destinations in the region - hidden and unknown destinations alongside renowned restaurants, classic cuisines alongside innovative and daring cuisines. 

The Israeli restaurants that are included in the ranking this year:

  • 6th place: George and John by Tomer Tal

  • 14th place: OCD of Raz Rahav

  • 24th place: a by Yuval Ben Naria

  • 32nd place: Animer by Hillel Tavkoli

  • 40th place: Milgo Malabar by Motti Titman

  • 48th place: Basta of Ilon Amir
