The diplomatic visa expired: the "fugitive president" of Brazil asked the Biden administration for a tourist visa | Israel today

Jair Bolsonaro arrived in Florida while still being the incumbent president at the end of last year, and remained there under a visa that had already expired at the beginning of the month • He is under investigation in light of the "Capitol riots" carried out by his supporters shortly after the inauguration of the new president, and may be arrested

Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil who left for the US just before his term ends in 2022, has applied to the US State Department for a tourist visa so he can stay there for at least another six months, the Financial Times reported.

Bolsonaro arrived in Florida while he was still president, which allowed him to stay for about a month under the diplomatic visa he had previously been issued.

This visa expired as soon as he returned to serve, and according to American law, the grace period he had left to use it ended within thirty days, that is, this week.

It is very likely that the real reason he wants to stay in the American sunshine state is that he is under investigation by the authorities of the current administration in Brasilia in view of the bloody events in the government complex in the capital at the beginning of the month, during which his supporters stormed the presidential palace, the Congress and the Supreme Court claiming that the winner - the left-wing candidate Luiz Incio da Silva ("Lola") - stole the election.

The investigation that was opened recently revolves not only about his role in possible incitement of the masses, among other things by not accepting the results of the elections, but also about his performance as president.

President Joe Biden is under increasing pressure to prevent Bolsonaro from continuing to evade the investigation, and dozens of Democratic members of Congress have asked the administration to act to shorten his stay.

Although it is not clear whether an extradition request was actually submitted by Brazil, a spokesperson for the US State Department recently stated that the administration would cooperate with any request from Lula's government.

Lula, who was president about a decade ago and managed to lead to the improvement of the situation of tens of millions, promised a similar socialist welfare and environmental policy that would put an end to the anti-democratic policies of the Bolsonaro camp, but as mentioned, the supporters of the outgoing president did not accept the election results and the Supreme Court's refusal to invalidate the results , and stormed the government institutions en masse about a week after the change of government.

Bolsonaro eventually condemned the attack on Twitter, but did so relatively late and weakly:

"Peaceful demonstrations within the framework of the law are part of democracy, but vandalism and invasion of government complexes like today are the exception, and it was the same when the left did it in 2013 and 2017," Bolsonaro said yesterday (Sunday).
