When does the IRS send tax refunds?

According to the IRS, most taxpayers who file an "accurate and smooth" tax return will receive their refund within 21 days of electronic filing.

If the return is mailed, it will take longer for the refund to arrive.

Also, the fastest way to get your refund is to file "electronically with direct deposit" and avoid paper returns if possible.

Most Americans get a federal tax refund every year, and for many, that refund is a big financial boon.

Is your tax refund late?

These could be the reasons

Here's the scenario: It's been more than 21 days since the IRS received your return, and you haven't received your refund.

According to the tax agency, some returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including:

  • It was presented on paper

  • Has errors, such as the incorrect amount of the Refund Recovery Credit

  • It's incomplete

  • Needs further review overall

  • You are affected by identity theft or fraud

  • If the return includes a claim for the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit

  • If the return includes Form 8379, allowance for injured spouse;

the process can take up to 14 weeks

Where is your refund?

If you want to know the status of your refund, you can do it through the IRS site "Where is my refund?"

and the IRS2Go mobile app.

In both cases, to access information about your tax refund you must provide:

  • Your social security number or ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

  • Your marital status for tax purposes

  • The exact amount of your refund

You can check the status of your return 24 hours after submitting the return electronically, or 4 weeks if you submitted it on paper.
