Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that the recent decision of the European Court of Human Rights on the events in eastern Ukraine confirms the correctness of Russia's decision to withdraw from the Council of Europe.
“Such a unilateral and politicized approach has nothing to do with the standards of international justice that are being discussed in Strasbourg, and the decision taken by the European Court of Human Rights confirms the correctness and legality of our country’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe in March last year,” Zakharova was quoted by Novosti Agency as saying today.
Zakharova indicated that the decision taken by the European Court of Human Rights did not surprise Moscow, because it is a continuation of what is in line with Western anti-Russian positions.
The President of the European Court of Human Rights, Chofra O'Leary, announced last Thursday that the court had partially accepted the joint lawsuit between the Netherlands and Ukraine against Russia.
It is noteworthy that Russia announced at the end of last December the termination of the agreements concluded with the Council of Europe, and a special decision was submitted to President Vladimir Putin before it was referred to the State Duma for approval.
