The death toll from a boat accident carrying schoolchildren in the waters of Lake Tanda dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, northwestern Pakistan, has risen to 51, including 49 students.
"The boat was overloaded with 20 to 25 people," the Pakistani police spokesman, Fazl Naeem, told Fars Press, referring to the rescue of four students and a teacher.
The efforts of the rescuers continued for three days in icy waters to recover the bodies of 49 students between the ages of seven and 14, in addition to a teacher and the boat captain.
Khater Ahmed, an official in one of the rescue agencies, pointed out that "the dam's water was icy due to the cold weather, which hindered the rescue mission, and divers were able today to descend to deep levels to recover the remaining bodies."
More than 25 divers participated in the rescue mission with the support of army divers, and a previous outcome of the boat capsize indicated last Sunday that ten children were killed.
