Doctors at a New York hospital made an
alarming discovery
in 2019 when treating a 63-year-old patient.
after a fall.
Her penis was turning to bone
due to a rare medical condition called penile ossification.
According to the article published in
Urology Case Reports
, the patient came to Lincoln Hospital with
knee pain
after suffering a fall while walking with his cane.
When performing
an X-ray examination
in the hip area, the doctors noticed something unusual.
The images showed
extensive calcification of the soft tissues that make up the penis.
When asked about this issue, the patient confirmed having penile discomfort, but had no other symptoms that would reveal urological problems normally associated with his age.
There was nothing to indicate incontinence or prostate problems.
The patient came to Lincoln Hospital with knee pain after falling while walking with his cane.
Just 40 registered cases
After several weeks of investigation, the doctors discovered that the patient suffered from
ossification of the penis,
a condition for which there are barely
40 registered cases.
The condition occurs when
calcium salts are deposited in the soft tissues of the organ
, causing bone plaques to appear where there shouldn't be any.
A 2017 report published in
Reviews in Urology
documented the case of a 43-year-old man who went to the doctor with penile pain.
Surgeons removed several fibroids, or benign tumors.
Months later the patient decided to treat his erectile dysfunction with a prosthesis and then the doctors discovered that
80% of the tissue of his reproductive organ had calcified.
The New York Post newspaper also took up the issue.
The syndrome of that patient is known as Peyronie's disease or plastic induration of the penis, and it is
a disease of unknown cause
that is characterized by the formation of a fibrous band that causes the deviation or curvature of the penis during erection.
Depending on the extent of that fibrous band, the process can make penetration impossible or make
an erection painful.
According to the doctors signing the
Urology Case Reports
, the 63-year-old patient had the same condition, but doctors were unable to perform additional tests to confirm it because
the man refused further testing or treatment
despite the calcification resolving .
had spread over the entire length of his member.
Doctors were unable to perform additional tests because the man refused to undergo further testing.
“We have not been able to examine the causes of the condition because the patient decided to leave in defiance of our warnings,” the authors write.
The end of the man's problem is unknown since he did not attend any consultation again.
There are other, less common causes of penile ossification
, such as metabolic disorders, trauma, chronic hemodialysis, and syphilis and gonorrhea infections.
