Florian Bachelier: "Pension reform: let's get out of the caricatural tweets contest"

FIGAROVOX/TRIBUNE - The former deputy, former first quaestor of the National Assembly, insists on the need to finance the pay-as-you-go pension system other than by workers' contributions alone. And pleads, among other things, to set the minimum pension at 1700 euros.

Florian Bachelier is a lawyer.

He was LREM deputy from 2017 to 2022 and first quaestor of the National Assembly (XV).

Those who say that we must start from reality and clinical findings are right: today we have fewer workers to pay the pensions of the increasing number of retirees.

Therefore yes, we need to find new funding without lowering current pensions or increasing taxes.

Yes, we are culturally and historically attached to the distribution system, unique in the world, which can only be financed by workers' contributions.

Yes, the special diets must be able to be re-studied from one century to another and the physical arduousness of certain trades truly taken into account.

And yes, it was clearly said during the presidential campaign.

But they are not wrong, those who say that the French sent an equally clear message to the executive during the legislative elections, that the last 5 years have absolutely not clarified the issue of this reform of the financing of retirement pensions.

They are above all right to say that after these last three years wrung out by the Covid, the threat of world war and a series of energy, climatic and migratory crises, it does not appear to be an absolute priority or even skilful to "totemize" this subject not more than legislating on the end of life.

Moreover, the French people have the legitimate right to expect from their political representatives something other than a contest of caricatural tweets, mug selfies, debates on hollow language elements and Excel spreadsheet evenings.

Let us therefore move forward on the basis of the text of the Prime Minister but draw immediate lessons to seriously take into account the real level of fatigue of the French.

Beyond the technical issues, we must urgently get out of the rut of resignation and defiance that leads to chaos.

Politics is also the moment.

Which reflects the hierarchy of priorities and efforts.

We must look our situation squarely in the face.

And we also need hope.

In the sense of projects positively mobilizing our Nation.

Let's get out of the logic of accountancy, on the one hand, to measure once and for all how lucky we are to be French, and on the other hand to imagine together an even bigger and fairer model that corresponds to the constraints and the aspirations of our time but also of future generations.

What are we really afraid of?

Not being able to bear the cost of supporting old age.

Clearly, the retirement home of our parents.

And if we start from this objective?

No one in France should be able to worry about that.

And if consequently, we guaranteed to each one who enters what we call a little pompously the loss of autonomy a level of pension which allows him not to ask his children for the supplement?

Go further.

What if we thought about a minimum and equal distribution system for everyone?

To be clearer, 1700 euros pension for all, regardless of past professional activity.

Journalist, farmer, teacher, surgeon, cashier: the same basis for all.

Free to those who could and wanted to do so in addition to the capitalization.

Let's go even further.

What if we took out of the commercial sector all activities related to the times in our lives when we need the support of the Nation: young age (nurseries), old age (Ehpad) and disability.

Let us open without taboos or dogmatic blinkers the site of a large public service, based on private non-profit and mutualism.

Without abusing big words, this quasi-civilizational project could mobilize, embark, all French people because it would concern all generations and the very idea that we have of our Nation.

Beyond the technical issues, we must urgently get out of the rut of resignation and defiance that leads to chaos.

We need hope and collective pride and, beyond words, positive projects that concretely mobilize as many people as possible.

Our country is not a GIE, it is an old Nation which needs to find itself and raise its head around ambitions greater than itself.

Let's listen.
