In a new provocative step, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the United States and South Korea will conduct theoretical exercises to enhance deterrence against nuclear threats, as he described it.
"Washington and Seoul will conduct theoretical exercises, in which complex scenarios focusing on nuclear threats on the Korean peninsula are discussed," Austin said in an article titled "The Alliance Stands By," published by South Korean news agency Yonhap.
Austin is visiting Seoul for the third time in his capacity as defense minister, and is scheduled to meet his South Korean counterpart Lee Jong-sub and President Yun Sok-yul.
These maneuvers constitute a provocative measure that increases the tension of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, where Washington and Seoul are constantly conducting maneuvers, which the DPRK considers an attempt to destabilize security and stability in the region.
