A corona infection can have long-term consequences.

Researchers have evaluated millions of data sets on Covid-19 in Germany.

This reveals a connection about which little was previously known.

Dresden – Risks remain after recovering from a Covid-19 infection.

Some corona sufferers are struggling with serious long-term consequences.

The issue of Long Covid has not yet been finally clarified.

More than 200 symptoms are now associated with the term Long Covid or Post Covid.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) caused a stir in an interview with a statement about the consequences for the human immune system, but then backtracked.

"Studies now show very clearly that those affected are often dealing with an immune deficiency whose duration we do not yet know," Lauterbach clarified on Twitter.

Critics accused the Federal Minister of Health of spreading panic.

Autoimmune disease: risk of corona infection significantly increased in unvaccinated people

So far, there has been a lack of reliable data on corona infections and consequential risks.

Now German researchers have evaluated a huge data set of health insurance for Corona.

Her analysis shows that people who have recovered from Covid-19 infection develop an autoimmune disease much more frequently than others.

"In all age and gender groups, autoimmune diseases occurred significantly more frequently in the period after infection," says Prof. Jochen Schmitt from the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, according to a statement.

Patients with a more severe course of corona had a particularly high risk.

Autoimmune diseases include rheumatism, but also vascular damage, intestinal inflammation and type 1 diabetes. The results of the study have so far only been published as a preprint and still have to be reviewed by independent experts.

  • Corona late effects: Autoimmune diseases can be Covid late effects.

This is shown by an analysis by scientists from the Dresden University Hospital, which was published as a preprint.

  • German researchers evaluated 38.9 million data from those with statutory health insurance from AOK Plus, Barmer, DAK-Gesundheit, IKK classic, Techniker Krankenkasse and company funds.

  • In the analysis, billing data from the years 2019 to June 2021 were evaluated.

It is about data from the first and second wave of the wild type Sars-CoV-2 and before the start of vaccination.

The researchers point out that the results relate to the follow-up of those affected with an infection with the wild-type virus.

There is currently no corresponding knowledge about other variants of the virus.

In order to understand the connections between Covid-19 and the diseases, further research is necessary, emphasize the scientists at the Dresden University Hospital.

But the results of the study would impressively show what important insights could be gained from patient data.

Future analyzes should focus on chronic diseases that arose during the pandemic.

Up to 65 million people suffer from Long Covid, according to a study published in the specialist journal Nuture.

Autopsies also show: Corona affects the whole body - a possible explanation for Long Covid.
